Since 2018, three international conferences have been organized within the framework of the working groups in Strasbourg, Heidelberg, and Basel.
These conferences serve as a moment to discuss the progress of cross-border research on the Inter-Religio project. They are also an opportunity to invite international experts outside the project to the scientific exchange on interreligious dialogue. As the objective of these scientific events is to welcome a wide audience and stimulate debate, contacts are made with international scientific associations studying religious issues

Conference in Strasbourg
Name of the event: “Academic status of theology”
Scientific supervisor: Professor Francis Messner
Date: November 5, 6, 7 2018, from 9 am to 5 pm
Venue: Salle de conférences de la Maison Interdisciplinaire des Sciences de l’Homme en Alsace (MISHA) – 5 allée du Général Rouvillois, 67000, STRASBOURG
Price: free of charge
Presentation of the conference:
The first part, dedicated to the “scientific status of theology”, will include interventions dealing with: the emergence of university theology from a historical perspective; the specificities, but also the common elements of the different theologies (Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist); the distinction between theology and religious sciences in terms of approaches, methodology and the relationship with a given religious tradition. A round table with social and political actors on the role and functions of theology in society should conclude this first part.
The second part of this scientific event will focus on the normative regulation of theology teaching in universities, with a first series of interventions on the organization of theology teaching in the light of domestic laws and the canonical texts of the Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim religions. A second series of contributions will deal with the legal status of the teaching of theology – the organization of the teaching of theology by the State – particularly in public and private universities in France, Germany and Switzerland.
This international conference is intended to identify possible responses to certain developments in the contemporary religious landscape characterized by a discourse that encourages communitarian withdrawal and different forms of fundamentalism. The reflection focuses on academic approaches to theology and religion with a view to promoting mutual knowledge of religions in an academic context. Religion, theologies and their development can be studied through academic methodology and a rational approach, without hindering religious beliefs and affiliations.

Presentation of the conference:
The conference will address some questions related to theological hermeneutics:
First, the current state of research and the historical evolution of interreligious hermeneutics will be examined. Subsequently, various methods of textual hermeneutics, in Islamic and Christian theology, will be presented. Then, scientific hermeneutics will be highlighted as an identity practice and the possibility of a theological hermeneutics of life, in a pluralistic society, will be discussed. Finally, existing approaches to interreligious hermeneutics will be discussed and the opportunities and limits of its future development will be presented.
The results of the conference will then be published in a compendium that will provide a comprehensive introduction to the theme of theological hermeneutics in interreligious relations. This book will also enrich INTER-RELIGIO’s training programme as a pedagogical tool.
